Breaking Through Conference
Monday 20 October 2008
Manchester Central, Petersfield, Manchester, M2 3GX
The fifth national Breaking Through Conference, will be held on the Monday 20 October 2008. The conference aims to bring together key stakeholders and decision makers to highlight the importance of issues of race equality within the NHS workforce.
Demographic and population changes within England require us to look closely at the workforce in the NHS and the needs of an increasingly diverse population. Without question, the NHS needs a workforce that reflects its population at all levels of the service. Strong leadership is central to ensuring the NHS delivers on a very demanding agenda which provides healthcare that is accessible, high quality and value for money. This Conference provokes thought and enables debate into how the NHS can develop a workforce that truly represents the population it serves and, become a world class organisation providing the best care to everyone through a truly diverse workforce.
David Nicholson CBE, the Chief Executive of the NHS adds,
"Unusually, in the developed world we have few clinical people in charge of organisations. We need to change that. There are not enough women and black people in senior positions, I need to do something about that as well. Today’s NHS has a responsibility to fully reflect the population it serves. I am fully committed to ensuring there are people from diverse backgrounds at all levels of the service but particularly at the highest levels where representation is exceptionally poor."
The Conference will give delegates the opportunity to:
- Understand the importance of a diverse workforce at senior levels in the NHS in the light of demographic changes in England
- Understand the barriers to career progression for Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) staff in the NHS and learn from best practice examples elsewhere
- Celebrate the contribution made to the NHS by BME staff over the last 60 years
- Discuss local issues in relation to leadership with specific reference to BME staff
- Network
The Conference will provide information and discussion for:
- Chief Executives
- Board members
- Directors
