TV’s KONNIE

TV presenter Konnie Huq will co-host the 2009 event with Breaking Through favourite, Henry Bonsu.

Konnie is perhaps best known as the longest running female presenter on BBC TV’s flagship programme, Blue Peter. During this time, she visited many countries, including a filming trip to Bangladesh and her parents’ village in Pabna as well as Dhaka. She has interviewed leading political figures including Tony Blair, Neil Kinnock, Ken Livingston and Boris Johnson. She is a former ambassador for the Red Cross and an active supporter of a number of charities.

Henry Bonsu

Henry will be making a welcome return to the Conference.

Henry is a seasoned journalist and broadcaster and uses his skills to keep speakers on track and ensure that everyone has the opportunity to participate and contribute.

He combines this into a uniquely humourous and charmismatic style, and will no doubt engage and entertain delegates once again.

YVONNE INVITED BACK TO WALES

The National Programme Lead Yvonne Coghill was invited by colleagues in the Public Services Management Department in Wales to talk to CEOs and senior Leaders about the importance of mentoring.

The session was opened by Dame Gill Morgan, Permanent Secretary of the Welsh Assembly and 50 senior leaders were in attendance.

The event went well and colleagues in Wales were really interested in the work we are doing on the Breaking Through Programme and have invited Yvonne to return and talk to colleagues in the various health boards about what we do.

SHOWCASING BME TALENT

On Saturday September 5th Dr Alfa Sa’adu, Consultant Gerontologist and chair of the BME network in West Herts Hospital Trust invited colleagues to a fund-raising event. The purpose of the event was to raise money for cancer research. The evening was a great success with many talented BME people singing, dancing and playing instruments. The highlight of the evening was the fashion show in which Alfa was dressed in his ceremonial chieftain robes. He looked amazing and a fantastic night was had by all.

FAREWELL, LUCIE!

If you have called the office in the last twelve months, you may have spoken to our resident Kiwi, Lucie Roxburgh.

Lucie joined us in 2008 as part of the central admin team based in Victoria House and has proved to be a real asset to the team and participants in supporting them with anything from booking places on events and programmes to advice about what we do. Unfortunately, visa restrictions and work permits meant that Lucie had to leave us at the beginning of September.

She will be a great loss to the Breaking Through Team, in particular to Cynthia and Ramima with whom she worked closely. We will miss Lucie very much but wish her all the very best in whatever she does next.

A Day in the Life of ... A Regional Co-ordinator

Many of you will have been supported by them but many of you may not know how they can support you.

The Breaking Through Regional Co-ordinators are field based members of the National Breaking Through Team who are there to provide expertise in the area of Leadership and Inclusion to individuals, Trusts and SHAs.

Each Regional Co-ordinator is responsible for supporting activity in one or two SHA areas, although currently due to vacancies, some RCs are covering up to four SHA areas. They work to promote the national programmes and support participants on these programmes but also to work alongside Trusts and SHAs to look at long term talent management strategies in relation to ensuring greater representation at senior levels within the NHS.

The RCs have worked with individuals to provide support around career management, access to mentors and advice on how to manage personal development. If you would like to contact your RC or you know someone who would, their contact details are below.
