Altogether Better Programme
What
The Altogether Better is a regional collaborative which started in 2008. Funded by the Big Lottery Fund Well Being Programme our aim is to build evidence and capacity around community empowerment in health and well-being with a model we call ‘Community Health Champions’ but which has many names and forms across the country.
We are testing out 16 local flagship models of empowering individuals to help improve the health and wellbeing of their communities, where health is currently poorest.
‘Community Health Champions’ are recruited and trained through a range of accredited and more informal courses. Our models are reaching out to seldom heard communities and systematically empowering them through building capacity and confidence to improve their own health and well-being. Our Champions are then supported to volunteer and influence their friends, families, neighbours and peers.
Why
Health inequalities remains a key challenge for our region, success in tackling the problem requires us to explore innovative and new ways of using our knowledge, expertise and resources. Our aim is to develop a strong evidence base to prove the potential value and impact of ‘Community Health Champions’ in the quest to reduce health inequalities.
Impact
The programme has already engaged over 1000 Community Health Champions from community and business settings with the estimated potential to reach 28,000.
By 2012 the project will have recruited 13,500 Community Health Champions’ with the potential to reach an estimated 85,000 people from targeted communities.
Through building awareness, knowledge, skills, self esteem and social networks we expect this to have a sustainable impact on the health and well-being of individuals and their communities. This will not only reduce health inequalities but also contribute to economic and involvement related outcomes as individuals learn new skills, gain in aspiration and participate in their communities.
